This is not a traditional frontend or backend role! It’s for engineers who:</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) as a force multiplier,</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">think in terms of systems, workflows, and agents, not just endpoints and screens,</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">can turn ambiguous product problems into working, production-ready solutions,</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">want to help evolve our platform toward an agent-driven future in healthcare.</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to re-imagine how our systems are built, extended, and operated as AI becomes a first class part of the development process.</p><p style="min-height:1.5em"></p><h2>What You’ll Do</h2><p style="min-height:1.5em">Build AI Native Systems</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Design, implement, and operate backend and fullstack systems that incorporate LLMs, tools, and agents as core components;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Build agentic workflows (multi-step, tool using, stateful systems) that solve real product and operational problems;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Integrate LLMs safely and reliably into production systems, with attention to observability, cost, and failure modes.</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">Engineer with AI as a Partner</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Use modern AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code/Codex/Pi/Cursor) to accelerate development, refactoring, and exploration;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Set patterns and standards for how AI is used in day to day engineering work;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Help the team move faster without sacrificing quality or clarity.</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">Product Driven Engineering</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Collaborate closely with Product Management, Design, and other stakeholders to shape solutions, not just implement specs;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Translate high level goals into technical architecture and execution plans;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Contribute to roadmap discussions with a strong systems and platform perspective.</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">Own the System End to End</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Design APIs, services, and data models (primarily backend leaning);</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Ensure reliability, security, privacy, and scalability in a regulated healthcare context;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Operate and observe the system’s behaviour in the real world;</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Improve developer experience and internal tooling where it unlocks leverage.</p><p style="min-height:1.5em"></p></li></ul><h2>What You’ll Need</h2><p style="min-height:1.5em">Required</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with strong knowledge of major parts of our tech stack (AWS, Java, Typescript)</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Strong experience in building with LLMs in production, not just prototypes</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Clear enthusiasm for the capabilities and opportunities of AI and agentic systems</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Strong system design skills and comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">Strong Plus</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Experience designing, building, and operating long running workflows, background jobs, or distributed systems</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Familiarity with healthcare, regulated products, or safety critical systems</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">Startup or fast moving product environment experience</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em">What We Care About (Beyond the Resume)</p><ul style="min-height:1.5em"><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">You’re curious and opinionated about where software development is going</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">You ship and you iterate based on real world feedback</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">You don’t wait for perfect specs; you help create them!</p></li><li><p style="min-height:1.5em">You see AI as a new abstraction layer, not a gimmick</p></li></ul><p style="min-height:1.5em"><em>Compensation: This role offers a salary of up to $175,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.</em></p><h2>What you can expect at 9amHealth</h2><p style="min-height:1.5em">At 9amHealth, you'll join the exciting environment of a startup with the stability of highly experienced founders that have successfully built a business from scratch.
